Topic: Estimation of Dimensions
Specific topic: Conversion of metric length
Behavioral objective: At the end of the lesson, student should be able to:
(i) convert metres to kilometers and vice-versa
(ii) convert millimeters to metres and vice-versa
Reference book: New General Maths for JSS 1 page 9

How do you convert millimeters to meters?
You divide the number of millimeters by 1000.
Reason: 1 meter equals 1000 millimeters
1000 meters = 1 kilometer, so you take the meters and divide them by 1000 and you get the kilometers.
https://youtu.be/ZNX-a-5jGeM
Example:
(a) Express in metres
(i) 3km
1000m = 1km
3km = 3 X 1000m = 3000metres
(ii) 5.1km
1000m = 1km
5.1km = 5.1 X 1000 = 5100metres
(b) Express in kilometers
(i) 4300m
1000m = 1km
;.4300m = 4300 = 4.3km
1000
(ii) 2km and 512m
= (2 X 1000m) + 512m
= 2000 + 512m
= 2512m
= (2512m / 1000)
= 2.512km

Evaluation:
Express the following in metres (a) 9km (b) 10km (c) 6.8km (d) 9.3km
Express as kilometer (a) 1500m (b) 3748m (c) 7km 502m
Assignment: Express as metres (a) 2.7km (b) 10.4km (c) 8km
Express as kilometers (a) 5km and 150m (b) 6km and 847m (c) 5822m
