MEANING OF SELF EMPLOYMENT
INTRODUCTION:

Anyone having something to do to earn money has an employment, on the other hand, anyone who has nothing to do to earn a living is unemployed. Some unemployed people sometimes join bad gangs and become thieve, armed robbers, prostitutes, fraudsters etc. Today, the society is full of unemployed youths who are able to work and are available to work, but currently without work. It is good for people to be employed either by self , government or private organizations.

MEANING OF SELF EMPLOYMENT:
Self employment is a situation where one employs one’s skills, abilities, education, wisdom, using one’s available resources to start a business for himself. It is a condition in which an individual provide job for himself without waiting for government or the private sector to employ him or her. It means having one’s business without working for or under anybody. Self employment also is the act of doing a legal business to earn a living without laboring for or under anybody

Some self employed people are employers of labour. Meaning that they too are employing other people to work for them and they pay the people salaries/wages. A self employed person is not accountable to anybody but to himself. Whatever is to be done is decided by him or her. He or she earns money and live a comfortable life.

SELF EMPLOYMENT PROJECTS:
There are different vocations in which a person may be engaged to be self employed. These include the following:

2. Carpentry
3. Hairdressing
4. Laundry services
5. Bricklaying
6. Painting
7. Trading (Buying and Selling)
8. Shoe-repairing/making
9. Catering
10. Barbing
11. Basket making
12. Printing
13. Poultry and livestock rearing
14. Welding
15. Automobile work
16. Photographing
17. Writing
18. Farming
19. Blacksmithing
20. Gold-smithing etc.

NEED FOR SELF EMPLOYMENT:
There are numerous benefits and gains of self employment. Some of them are as follows:

JOB CREATION/SELF RELIANCE:
Self employment gives opportunity for serious individuals to create job for themselves for livelihood since it is not possible for government to give employment to all the unemployed.

REDUCTION IN THE RATE OF CRIME:
Self employed people are usually seen as responsible and diligent citizen who will hardly have time for criminal acts or activities. They are usually committed to their vocation or business to ensure it progress. They are not idle or lazy and can never be the devil’s workshop.

SOURCE OF GOVERNMENT REVENUE:
A self employed person pays tax to the government through the money generated from his business. Such tax paid as money becomes a source of revenue to the government , which it uses in providing social amenities and services to the people.

NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Employment contributes immensely to the Gross National Product or output of the country, Whatever that is produced by the self employed people in terms of goods and services boost the total National Product of the nation. Their contributions promote economic and social life, which leads to national development.

SELF DEVELOPMENT AND ENHANCEMENT:
Self employment enable one to cater for oneself and provide his basic needs without reference to anyone. It gives people the opportunity to practice the profession or skills they have been trained for and also make investment in the business of their choice.

SOURCES OF FUNDING SELF-EMPLOYMENT
Self-employed persons can fund their operations or projects through a number of sources. Some of them are listed below:

PERSONAL SAVINGS:
This is a very reliable means of raising fund for self-employment business. A self-employed person is expected to have saved some amount of his personal income over a period of time to enable him start a business of his choice.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM PARENTS, RELATIVES AND FRIENDS:
A self-employed person can also raise fund from family members and friends who may want to support their loved ones to be on their own.

LOANS FROM BANKS OR INDIVIDUALS:
People can take loans from banks or other financial institutions to start their own business . they can also get loans from individuals.

GRANTS FROM GOVERNMENT OR DONOR AGENCIES:
Government or donor agencies give grants to some trained group of people under them to start their own business. E.g. NDE,NAPEP etc.

GRANTS FROM PHILANTHROPISTS IN THE LOCALITY.
Certain rich people in the locality can sometimes make fund available to individuals to set up their business and become self employed.

SALES OF PROPERTY:
Some people who are determine to own a business of their own and who cannot get fund from the above mentioned sources usually resort to sale of their property like land to raise fund for their business.

SKILL ACQUISITION TRAINING CENTRES:
Government has established some skills acquisition centres in the country for the sole purpose of training unemployed youths to acquire skills of their choice. Some private individuals through their various Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have also joined the government in establishing skills acquisition centres all over the country. The centres are as follows:


NATIONAL DIRECTORATE OF EMPLOYMENT (NDE)
National Directorate of Employment was established by president Ibrahim babangida’s administration in November 1989 under the decree 24 of same year. The agency was charged with the responsibility of fighting mass unemployment in Nigeria.

NATIONAL POVERTY ERADICATION PROGRAMME (NAPEP)
The Obasanjo administration established NAPEP and charged it with the responsibility of co-ordinating and monitoring all poverty eradication efforts at all levels in the country.

1. SCHOOLS: Some technical schools are established by government to train people in various skills of his choice.

2. PRIVATE WORKSHOP: Some people can learn the skills of their choice by undergoing an apprenticeship training with an artisan expert e.g. barbers, carpenters, fashion designers, mechanics etc.
