The Birth of Moses in Egypt.
THE BIRTH OF MOSES; - Moses’ father name was Amram and his mother name was Jochebed.
The birth of Moses occurred during reign of the pharaoh who refused to remember or acknowledge the good deeds of Joseph in Egypt .When he was made governor [Joseph]. The new pharaoh thought of increase in the population of Israelites and that they could join the enemies to fight against the Egyptians. He then commanded the Israelites midwives [Puah and Shiprah] to kill all the male children immediately they are born .Though they feared God and refused , he then ordered that all the male children that were born should be thrown into river Nile [in Egypt] to die.
In this dangerous situation was Moses born and his mother hid him for three months, she then put him into a water proof basket and took him to where pharaoh’s daughter normally take her bath, beside the river Nile hoping that the pharaoh’s daughter will see him .The princess saw the child and Miriam, Moses’ sister who was nearby persuaded her to allow her search for an Israelites woman who will take care of the baby. The princess eventually agreed and Miriam took Moses to Jochebed his mother who took care of him. When Moses grew up, Moses’ mother brought her to the princess in the palace and the princess named him Moses because she said, (I drew him at of water).

THE CALL OF MOSES EXO 3 1 - 15
Moses grew up under the custody of the princess in the palace. He was given the best Egyptian civilization, but despite that he did not forget his identity as Israelites. He used to go and see his people and God made him to see the plight, the hard times, and the slavery condition of his people. One day, because of this oppression he killed an Egyptian who was oppressing and terrorizing an Israelite. In another occasion two Israelites were fighting and moved in to settle the quarrel by separating them but the guilty one questioned the authority of Moses by saying; ‘who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian? Moses was frightened and greatly afraid of the king and thought that if king Pharaoh should know about it, he could be killed. Then he fled to the land of Midian and stayed with Jethro who happened to be the priest of Midian who later became the father-in-law. Moses married Zipporah the daughter of Jethro and he was taking care of Jethro’s cattle flock as a shepherd. Moses had a son called Gershom meaning ‘I have been a sojourner in a foreign land’ according to Moses.
The call of Moses came about when he took the flock of his father-in-law to mount Horeb [ or Sinai ] where he saw a bush burning but not consumed this strange scene drew his attention to it and as he drew near God warned him to remove his sandal because, it is was a holy place . In the burning bush God revealed himself to Moses and appointed him as a deliver and liberator to set His people free from slavery and oppression in Egypt. God said in exodus 3; 7.
Moses asked God who he will say he is if the people ask him his name.
‘And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM has sent me to you. That is God is all in all, who does things as He pleases him, He is God to be known by all the Israelites, that He is to be recognized by His saving acts of liberating the Israelites from bondage, His acts of salvation and the God of their fathers; Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that He had sent Moses to deliver (liberate) them from their slavery plight [situation] in Egypt.

Deborah and Barak lead their people to freedom
Contrary to the promise of the Israelites while in the wilderness not to serve or worship another god, they worshipped idol, in the land of Canaan. God punished them by allowing other nations to defeat and rule over them for many years under severe suffering but whenever they cry unto God to deliver them, God will have mercy and raised a judge [military leader] to rule them because of their stiff neck attitude or behavior.
So they continued like that till God raised Deborah and Barak as the Judges. During the time of Deborah and Barak the Israelites still faulted the covenant of not serving or worshipping another god and God punished them by allowing Jabin, the king of Canaan to defeat and rule over them with great suffering that lasted twenty years. The children of Israel cried unto God to save them. He had compassion on them and raised two judges who were Deborah & Barak to save them. Deborah was the wife of Lapidoth, a prophetess, that prophesies the mind of God and receives the messages from God for the Israelites her people. Prophesy was given to Barak through prophetess Deborah that God wanted him to raise an army of the children of Israel to fight the Canaanites, Barak agreed to raise army and to fight if only Deborah, the prophetess would accompany him to battle. Deborah made him realized that the glory of the war would go to a woman.
Both Deborah and Barak led the army of Israel against the Canaanites. Sisera, the commander of Canaanites army fled for his dear life and escaped being killed by Barak; he then hid himself in the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber, the Kenite. LESSON 5
Topic : Call to Service:
Sub- Topic 1: Meaning of service:
2: Examples of people who served in the Bible i. Joseph is sold to Egypt ii Joseph serves in Egypt.
Meaning of service
Service can be defined as work done for someone else. Human beings need one another for survival because no human being is independent. As Christians, when we work in God’s house we are rendering our service to God. Human beings also serve one another. For instance, leaders are appointed to serve their followers. The rich also have servants that render services to them in which the later get paid. Service should be voluntary and he who renders services must be faithful and diligent.

Example of people who served in the bible: Joseph: Gen 37:2,12.
Joseph served his father faithfully. At the age of seventeen, he was shepherding the flock with his brothers. On one occasion, his father sent him to see his brothers on the field to see how they were fairing. But on getting there, he couldn’t find them at Shechem, he went further to Dothan where he found them his brothers caught him and sold him to some Ishmaelite traders. The traders took Joseph to Egypt where they sold him as a slave.
Joseph serves in Egypt : Because he was diligent in Potiphar’s house where he was a slave, he served his master diligently despite the fact he was an Egyptian. Also ,when he was in prison, all other prisoners were kept in his care.Gen 39:22.When he left Prison and he was given appointment in pharaoh cabinet because he interpreted the king’s dream, Joseph still distinguished himself with the way he carefully gathered, stored and preserve enough grain in the years of abundance and its distribution and sales in the years of famine.
In Summary, Joseph served his father, brothers, Potiphar, co-prisoners, Pharaoh and Egypt.

LESSON 7
TOPIC: Call to Service
Sub- Topic 1: Life in God’s service 1peter 2:18-25
2: Problem s of service
3: Profession: appointment, life experience
Life in God’s service
God is King and we are his servants. Those who are above us in authority are standing in place of God. Therefore we should serve them faithfully with respect and in humility. We may suffer in the course of our service to God. But we should bear our suffering patiently. This is because Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour also suffered in his service to God but bore it patiently.
Christians in the service of God should follow the good example of Jesus; render faithful and loyal service to God and endure the suffering that we might encounter.

Ways in which Christians are called to the service of God.

Profession
A profession is a vocation, occupation or career. It is the work we have been trained to do as a professional, and for which we earn our living. You are trained to be teacher, lecturers, priests, pastors, lawyers, doctors, nurses, tailors, singers etc.
Appointment: God has given each and every one of us a talent or ability to work for him when we grow up. God uses our profession to call us into his service. He calls us to serve Him any capacity that we are qualified.
Life experience: Our service to God as Christians demands that we serve God in any area where our services are most needed, especially in the rural areas. Therefore, our going to the rural areas there means that we are sacrificing everything in order to serve God.

WEEK 6
LESSON 8
Topic: CALL TO REPENTANCE (2 Samuel 12: 7 – 13; Psalm 51; Jonah 3: 1 – 10)
CONTENT: 1. MEANING OF REPENTANCE
2. KING DAVID OBEYS GOD’S CALL TO REPENTANCE
3. THE PEOPLE OF NINEVEH REPENTED OF THEIR SINS
THE MEANING OF REPENTANCE
To repent means to regret, be sorry, feel sorrow or feel ashamed for any wrong done. Therefore, repentance is the act of regretting or feeling sorry or ashamed for any wrongdoing. It is the realization that what we have done is bad/wrong and we are ready to apologize and ask for forgiveness.
KING DAVID OBEYS GOD’S CALL TO REPENTANCE (2 SAMUEL 12:7-13; PSALM 50)
David was the second King of Israel. The Israelite army was fighting against the Ammonites but King David did not go to fight the war together with his armies. During his course of relaxation at home, he desired a walk on his roof, which he did and led him into series of sins when he saw a naked woman (Bathsheba) taking her bath in her house:
- Committed Adultery with Bathsheba.
- Killed her husband (Uriah).
He became sober and repented after Prophet Nathan ministered unto him (Psalm 51).

THE PEOPLE OF NINEVEH RESPONDED TO THE CALL TO REPENTANCE (JONAH 1:1-4:11)
The people of Nineveh were evil in their ways. They did many evil things to one another. They were wicked. They did not help those in trouble. They did not feel sorry for all the wrong that they had done and they continued to do.
God told the Prophet Jonah to go and call the people of Nineveh to repentance otherwise He would destroy them. At first he refused and ran away from God’s directive to Tarshish but later went to the town of Nineveh and called the people there to repentance. The people felt sorry of all the bad things that they had done. They repented and asked God for forgiveness. And, God forgave them.

EVALUATION:
1. In your words define Repentance.
2. Explain how the people of Nineveh repented of their sins and what was the attitude of Jonah at first?

WEEK 7
LESSON 9
Topic: CALL TO REPENTANCE (2 SAMUEL 3:18; 4:10-21)
CONTENT: 1. JOHN THE BAPTIST CALLED THE PEOPLE FOR REPENTANCE
2. CONSEQUENCES FOR LACK OF REPENTANCE
JOHN THE BAPTIST CALLED THE PEOPLE TO REPENTANCE
God sent John the Baptist to the Jews to call them to repentance. He preached to them the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The people regretted their wrong doings. They came to John to confess their sins. John the Baptist baptized all the people who repented of their sins.
Then, they asked John what they should do and he told them to be of good behaviour. John the Baptist then told them that the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins was to prepare them for the coming of Jesus Christ, who will baptize them with the Holy Spirit.

The work of the Holy Spirit will be:
to take away the evil influence of the devil
to destroy the power of sin
to melt the heart of stone that caused them to do evil things replacing it with the heart of flesh.
He will allow the Holy Spirit to give them spiritual power to obey God and to become righteous.
CONSEQUENCES FOR LACK OF REPENTANCE (I SAMUEL 3:18; 4:10-21)
God is not happy with those who lack repentance. He punishes them for their refusal to feel sorry in repentance, regret their actions and ask for forgiveness. In the Bible, Hophni and Phinehas were two brothers whom God punished for their lack of repentance.
Hophni and Phinehas were the sons of Eli - a Prophet in Israel in charge of the house of God at Shiloh. His sons were assistant Priests who helped him with the work of God. Hophni and Phinehas did so many evil in the sight of God with hardened heart.

At times, they desired their share of the meat for sacrifice raw and even forcefully. At other times, they forced women that came for sacrifice into sin right at the altar of God.
God in his infinite mercy sent message to Eli through Samuel. He replied Samuel “it is the Lord; let Him do what seemeth Him good”. In the long run, the same day Eli died, his two sons died, his daughter-in-law - Phinehas’ wife died during child birth (named the child Ichabod), and the ark of God was taken.
EVALUATION:
1. What did John the Baptist preached about?
2. Give account of a Biblical example that experienced God’s judgment as a result of lack of obedience.
