LESSON 1
Topic: Relationship in the Family
BIBLICAL REFERENCES: EPH. 6:1-9. ECCLE.12:1. PROV. 22:1.COL. 3:18-21. I PETER 3:1-7.

SUB-TOPIC:
MEANING OF RELATIONSHIP
MEANING OF FAMILY
TYPES OF FAMILY
RECOGNITION OF FAMILY MEMBERS
ROLES OF FAMILY MEMBERS
CONCEPT OF GOOD FAMILY NAME

CONTENT:
MEANING OF RELATIONSHIP:
Relationship is the tie or degree of kinship or intimacy, affinity in an affair. Relationship develops when people live, play, do things together or worship together.

MEANING OF FAMILY:
A family is a group of people who are related by blood or by marriage. Families are the origin of human communities. Some members of a family include father, mother, children, relatives, grandparents and in-laws.

TYPES OF FAMILY:
There are different types of family e.g. nuclear, extended, paternal and maternal family.

The Nuclear Family – is made up of husband, and children, including adopted children and wards. The nuclear family is also called the natural or restricted family.

Extended Family – is made up of husband, wife, children, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. It is also made up of the relatives of the parents in the nuclear family.

Paternal Family – the family lineage is traced through the father’s side.

Maternal Family – the family lineage is traced through the mother’s side.

RECOGNITION OF FAMILY MEMBERS:
Parents’ parents – Grandparents
Father and mother – Parents
Father’s and mother’s brothers – Uncles
Father’s and mother’s sisters – Aunts
Brother’s or Sister’s sons – Nephews
Brother’s or Sister’s daughters – Nieces
Uncle’s or Aunt’s children – First cousins
First cousins’ children – Second cousins

ROLES OF FAMILY MEMBERS: EPH. 6:1-9; 5:21 – 33; COL. 3: 18 – 21
Every member of the family has God ordained roles to play for love, harmony, progress and peaceful co-existence of the family.
Failure of any member of the family to play his or her role will make the family not to be what God planned for it.
Children are to obey their parents in the fear of God. That is, the children’s obedience to the parents should be in agreement with the word of God. They are also to honour; respect their parents so that it will be well with them and so that they may live long on the earth.

Fathers and Mothers – are to take care of the children, provide for them and not to provoke them, but to nurture and admonish the children in truth i.e. they are to train them to be disciplined children, instruct them with the word of God.

Servants/Wards – are to be obedient to the masters with fear and trembling, serving in singleness of heart and without eye-service. Their service should be as to the Lord Jesus Christ and not as to men, or men-pleasers, but as servants of the Lord Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. The service they render should be of good will as to the Lord who will reward them accordingly for well doing.

Wives – are to be subject and submissive to their husbands in everything as the church is subject and submissive unto Christ the head of the church. Wives are to recognize their husbands as the head of the family. They are to also respect and reverence their husbands.

Husbands – are to love their wives sacrificially as Christ loved the church and died for it. Husbands are to care, cherish and relish their wives as their own bodies, since no man ever hates his own flesh. It is Gods command that the man should leave his father and mother and cleave unto his own wife so that both of them can become one flesh.
Image

CONCEPT OF GOOD FAMILY NAME:
The concept of a good family name is manifested by the character, virtues and the up-bringing of members of the family. Normally, family good name is not bought with money, but comes as a result of good reputation shown by the members. This include hardworking, discipline, honesty, respect for other, politeness, courtesy, kindness, public spiritedness, assistance to others especially the needy etc.
On the other hand, family good name is tarnished and destroyed by vices like waywardness of children, fighting, drunkenness, immorality, robbery either by pen or by gun, cultism and such anti-social behavior portrayed by the members of the family.
The Bible has this to say, “A good name is to be chosen, rather than great riches, and favour is better than silver or gold”. Proverbs 22:1.

MORAL LESSONS:
The plan of God is for all members of the family to live peacefully together. Therefore, anything that can lead to trouble or break up of the family should be avoided.
All members of the family are to play their roles with the progress of the family in view.
Every member of the family should protect the good name of the family, because a good name is better than silver and gold.

EVALUATION:
1. Mention one role of:
i. Children
ii. Father
iii. Mother
iv. Servant
2. Why is it necessary to protect your family name?

ASSIGNMENT:

Image

CHOOSING FRIENDS AT SCHOOL:
A friend is someone who is very close to us. Friendship occurs as a result of likeness.
During our first days at school, we have no friends. We are just individuals from different home who have been brought together to learn.
Eventually, we are to choose some of our class mate or school mate to become our friends. Human being has been created by God in way that we can’t live in isolation. On a daily basis, we need to interact with our fellow mates to discuss, learn and impact knowledge. Friends are inevitable in the journey of life. They can either make you or mar you.

REASONS FOR CHOICE OF FRIENDS:
At most times, we choose friends because of the same age group, common interest or school clubs. At times, our friendship becomes a lifelong relationship (family-friends).

MORAL LESSONS:
1. To grow in life in all areas, we need one another.
2. We can’t do without the help of others so we must show ourselves friendly.

ASSIGNMENT:
1. The school consists of __________ groups (a) four (b) three (c) five (d) two
2. A person who is very close to you is ________ (a) enemy (b) friend (c) boss (d) mate

LESSON 3
Topic: RELATIONSHIP IN THE SCHOOL
BIBLICAL REFERENCES: 1 SAMUEL 18:45. 1 KINGS 11:5-13. PROVERBS 1:10, 1 THESS. 3:6-13

SUB TOPIC:
FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN DAVID AND JONATHAN
RESULT OF BAD FRIENDSHIP

CONTENT:
Friendship can’t be ruled out in any facet of life. Animals in the forest communicate with each other not to talk of human beings created in the image of God. There are some examples found in the Bible:

FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN DAVID AND JONATHAN
Jonathan was the son of Saul, the first king of Israel. David was the son of Jesse, a shepherd. David and Jonathan became friends after God helped David to kill Goliath of Gath (Philistine) as he lived in the house of King Saul, and married his daughter. Jonathan gave David his robe, a bow, arrow and girdle for presents as a mark of their friendship. Jonathan chose David as his friend because he was a good boy. He was brave and he trusted in the lord. The friend at mid-night: Luke 11:5-13

QUALITIES OF GOOD FRIENDS:
i. Bravery
ii. Trust in the lord
iii. Fear of the lord
iv. Faithfulness
v. Obedience
vi. Reliability
Image

RESULT OF BAD FRIENDSHIP (PROV. 1:10; 2THES. 3:6-13)
The Bible made it clear that “evil communication corrupts good manners”. This is true among all human but mostly influential on students. Having bad friends is a great danger because it is easier to influence human negatively than positively. Thus, it is easier for a criminal to influence his good friend than for a good boy to influence a criminal to become good boy.
Here are some characters found in bad friends: truancy, smoking, homosexual, lesbianism, prostitution, drinking, stealing, laziness and so on.

MORAL LESSONS:
1. We must learn to pray to God to help us choose friends who possess good qualities in life, like Jonathan.
2. Some friends are not reliable and may disappoint us when we need help most, so we must be careful.
3. We should learn to pray to God to help us avoid friends who are unreliable and can disappoint us.
4. The evils of bad friendship can destroy our future to succeed and prosper in life.
5. We must learn to pray to God to help us avoid the evils of bad friendship so as to succeed and prosper in life.

ASSIGNMENT:
1. The friend of David is ______ (a) Saul (b) Abner (c) Jonathan (d) Goliath
2. These are the qualities of a good friend except? (a) truth (b) brave (c) thieves (d) faithful
3. Name two factors that aid students in choosing friends at school.
4. List five evils of making bad friends close to you.
5. What are the conditions that surround our choice of friend?

LESSON 4
Topic: RELATIONSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY
BIBLICAL REFERENCES: MATTHEW 25: 31-46

SUB TOPIC:
A. IDENTIFICATION OF THE NAMES OF COMMUNITY LEADERS.
B. WAYS OF SUSTAINING RELATIONSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY.

CONTENT:
A. IDENTIFICATION OF THE NAMES OF COMMUNITY LEADERS.
The Human Community:
The human community is a group of people living in an area. It is where we live with our parents and neighbours. In a community, different kinds of people live and work there to earn their living. In any community, there are good or bad people, rich and poor people, lazy and hardworking people, trouble makers and trouble-shooters.
The people in the community, meet, mix, relate and interact with each other every day in the compounds where they live, on the roads, in the streets, in the church, in the market, in the offices and in many other places. As they mix and interact with each other, relationships are established.

Community Leaders:
In every human community, there are different kinds of leaders. There are community leaders, Church or Religious leaders, Education or School leaders and political leaders, etc. Those who are community leaders are the Chiefs, the Council of Elders and Community Development leaders or leaders of Community Progress Unions. These leaders play significant roles in the affairs of the community and the progress of the community.
Image

EVALUATION:
1. What is a Community?
2. Name 2 community leaders.
3. How is relationship established in the community?

LESSON 5
B. WAYS OF SUSTAINING RELATIONSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY.
For the peace, unity and progress of a community people in the community are duty bound to develop or establish good relationship with each other. There are ways of sustaining good relationship and ways of destroying good relationship among the people of the community.

Respect for Elders and Leaders:
This means that children, honour and obey their parents, teachers and prefects at school. Every citizen of the community submits to the authority of the chiefs and elders. This enhances the unity, progress and prosperity of the community and the continuity of a good and healthy relationship.
On the other hand, if children are unruly, disrespectful to parents, teachers and prefects at school, while adult and citizens of the community do not submit to or obey the authority of chiefs and elders in the community, then there will be fighting, confusion and breakdown of law and order which will result in strained relationship and lack of progress in the community.
Image

Obedience to Law and Order:
The laws of the land just like the rules and regulations in the school are made to control human behavior in the community. The laws tell us what is good to do and what is bad to avoid. This helps to maintain and sustain good relationship with one another. To sustain good relationship in the community, citizens needs to:
1. Respect each other.
2. Obey the laws of the land.
3. Do not trespass other people’s rights, Commit crimes such as fighting, cheating, fraud(419) etc

Participation in Community Development Programmes:
Good citizens contribute levies and donations for such projects, thus promoting good relationship and progress in the community as governments alone cannot provide all the needed facilities in the community.
Image

Caring for the Needy:
The Bible teaches that we should be our brother’s keeper. We are expected to be helpful to others especially the poor, the physically challenged or handicapped people. These are people who could not provide the basic necessities of life for themselves. They have to be assisted to survive. There is love in sharing; you can help a fellow student with part of your pocket money in buying some eatables from the tuck-shop when he or she is in need. The Lord Jesus taught that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Image

Religious Tolerance:
Religious tolerance simply means peaceful coexistence between people of different religion. As Christians, we live in the same community with people of other religions. In Nigeria there are three major religions, Christianity, Islam and African Traditional Religion. Religious tolerance is based on the understanding that there are three clear elements common to all three major religions in Nigeria. These elements are:
1. The common belief in the Almighty God as the Creator and Controller of the world;
2. The good relationship between God and human beings got broken down due to the fault of human beings; and
3. There is need to restore the broken relationship between God and human beings.

MORAL LESSONS:
1. You have a responsibility to help sustain good relationship in the school between teachers and students and among students.
2. You should pray to God to help you sustain good relationship in the school and in your home community.
3. As a true follower of Christ, you are to show religious tolerance and love both Christians and non-Christians alike.
4. We are not to imitate religious fanatics in killing people of other religion and destroying their places of worship.

EVALUATION:
1. Mention 3 ways of sustaining good relationship in the community.
2. What is religious tolerance?

ASSIGNMENT:
OBJECTIVE
1. The Community is a place…… (a) where people live and fight (b) where people live and earn their living (c) where criminals organize operations (d) where workers congregate every day.

(a) Caring for the needy
(b) Showing respect for elders
(c) Participating in communal labour
(d) Profiteering at the expense of others comfort

LESSON 8
Topic: RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
BIBLICAL REFERENCES: LUKE 6:9-13.

SUB TOPIC:
1. PRAYER AS MEANS OF COMMUNICATING WITH GOD
2. RELATING WITH GOD

CONTENT
PRAYER AS MEANS OF COMMUNICATING WITH GOD
Prayer is a means by which we communicate with God. When we cultivate the habit of praying constantly to God, we come close to Him. The more we pray, the more the relationship grows. For our prayers to be answered, our prayer should be based on faith.

When Jesus was with His disciples, they observed that he always prayed to God. He would pray in the morning, afternoon and evening. As a result, Jesus had very close relationship with God. Therefore, one day when He had finished praying, they asked him to teach them how to pray, Jesus taught them the “Lord’s Prayer”. The importance of the Lord’s Prayer is to give us the pattern of how we should arrange our approach to our Heavenly Father – from thanks to our request and also ending with praise and attributing the glory to Him.
Image

Relating with God through prayer is to have close, personal and intimate relationship with him.

RELATING WITH GOD
Here are some ways we can relate with God:
1. Reading the Bible: When we read or study the Bible – word of God – carefully, we learn that God’s relationship with human being is based on love, kindness, mercy and forgiveness. The Bible tells us that this relationship between God and human being, can be traced from the time of the creation of Adam and Eve, the Israelites and also the fullest expression of this is in Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Image

2. Worshiping God: To worship is to show adoration, reverence and devotion to God. We worship God when we go to Church to worship him on Sundays along with our family. In the act of worship in the Church, we praise God with songs
Image

3. Praising God: To praise God, is to magnify, exalt, glorify and bless Him. God created us to praise and glorify him for evermore and also for His goodness to us.
Image

4. Prayer: Praying does entail more than closing our eyes. The Bible says “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking”. Matthew 6:7. It is a heart to heart communication to God as we make our desires known to our Heavenly Father.
Image

ASSIGNMENT:
1. What is prayer?
2. State five ways of relating with God.
3. For our prayers to be answered, our prayer should be based on ________.
4. Write out the Lord’s Prayer.

LESSON 9
Topic: RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
BIBLICAL REFERENCES: LUKE 6:9-13.

SUB TOPIC:
WAYS GOD TALKS TO US
WAYS OF MAINTAINING GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

CONTENT:
WAYS GOD TALKS TO US
God is always talking to us, it’s only that we are not ready to hear Him. God talks to us through the following ways:
1. Through our parents:
God loves us and wants us to grow into obedient, hardworking, useful and responsible Christian citizens. Therefore, he has given us good parents to ensure that we do what he wants us to do at all time. Obedience to our parents simply signifies the same to God.
Image

2. Through the Bible:
The word of God tells us that the Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to human beings. In His revelation, God made it known that obedience to him leads to success and prosperity; while disobedience to him leads to failure and poverty in life (Deuteronomy 28:2,15). Job is a very good example of someone whose obedience to God led to success and prosperity. Saul, the first king of Israel is a very good example of someone whose disobedience to God led to failure, misfortune and poverty.
Image

3. Through the Church Leaders:
As in the Old Testament, God still speaks to us through His ministers. The only problem that we have now is just that many profess to be His mouth piece but only prophesy for their belly, when He has not spoken. Jesus speaks through our religious leaders who are: Priests, Pastors, Teachers and so on.
Image

WAYS OF MAINTAINING GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
There are several ways of maintaining relationship with God. These include:
1. Loving one another: We show love to one another when we are kind to strangers who have lost their way, poor people, carry load for elderly people, visit the sick in hospital, motherless homes or prisoners in prison.

2. Daily prayer: When we continuously talk to God in prayer, like Jesus did, it will help to maintain relationship with him all the time. We should pray to God when we wake up in the morning, in the afternoon, and before going to bed.

3. Living a holy life: ‘To be holy’ is to be ‘righteous,’ therefore to live a holy life is to live a righteous, virtuous and upright life. It is to be morally good in all that we feel, think, say and do. However, it is not easy to be holy by doing all the above holy things all the time without the help of the Holy Spirit.

4. Worship and doing good: To maintain good relationship with God, we have to worship him always. We have to go to Church every Sunday and worship him together with our family.

5. Reading the Bible: In reading the Bible we learnt how God showed love, kindness, and mercy to Adam and Eve, to the people at Tower of Babel. We also learnt how God called Abraham.

6. Forgiving one another: We must learn to forgive all those who wrong us. If we find it difficult to forgive those who wrong us, we should pray to God through Jesus to give us spiritual love to overcome that difficulty and forgive all those who offend us, so that we can maintain our good relationship with God all the time “…and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors…..but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:12, 15 KJV.
Image

MORAL LESSON
1. Sin is a major hindering factor to smooth communication with God.
2. Its only when we make our heart desires known to our Heavenly Father before He can respond with blessings.
3. God can never be too busy not to attend to our prayer when we call on Him in faith.
4. For our Heavenly Father to forgive us, we need to forgive others too.

ASSIGNMENT:
1. State five ways of maintaining good relationship with God.
2. Mention three ways by which God talks to us.
3. Memorize the Lord’s Prayer.
4. Memorize Psalm 150.

LESSON 11
Topic: CALL TO OBEDIENCE
BIBLICAL REFERENCES: GENESIS 12:1-9. GENESIS 22:1-19

SUB TOPIC:
ABRAHAM DEMONSTRATES HIS OBEDIENCE
THE BIRTH OF ISAAC
THE SACRIFICE OF ISAAC

CONTENT
ABRAHAM DEMONSTRATES HIS OBEDIENCE
In the land of Canaan, Abraham continued to trust God. When Abraham was ninety years old, God appeared to him and made a covenant (agreement) with him, which also extends to his descendants. Then God asked him to do two things to demonstrate his obedience to him: First, Abraham and his descendants were to circumcise all their male children on the eight day. The second was to sacrifice his only son Isaac.

THE BIRTH OF ISAAC AND THE CIRCUMCISION OF MALE CHILDREN (Gen. 21:1-9)
In the agreement, God promised Abraham that his wife who was barren would give birth to a baby boy. They believed the promise and soon afterwards his wife conceived and bore him a son, he named him Isaac. Exactly eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham demonstrated his obedience to God by circumcising him.

THE SACRIFICE OF ISAAC (Genesis 22:1-19)
When Isaac was about twelve years of age, God asked Abraham to go and offer the child as a sacrifice to Him in the land of Moriah. God wanted to test Abraham’s obedience and confidence because He knew Abraham loved Isaac very much.
Abraham obeyed God’s command without question. When he took out his knife to slay Isaac for the sacrifice, an angel of the Lord stopped him. Abraham took the ram that was provided for him in a thicket and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham therefore called the name of the place: `The Lord will provide-Jehovah Jireh’.
God was so happy with the obedient trust of Abraham that He decided to reward him for his faithfulness.

MORAL INSTRUCTION
1. Abraham left his country to an unknown destination as directed by God. We should never question God when he directs.
2. Abraham agreed to sacrifice Isaac to God in obedience to Him. Today we should obey God by sacrificing our time money and resources for the progress of the Church.
3. We should trust in God as Abraham did and he received the blessing.
4. If we believe in God as Abraham did, it will also be reckoned to us as righteousness.

ASSIGNMENT
1. What did God expected from Abraham to do so as to possess the blessing?
2. Describe how Abraham answered the question of Isaac on the way to the sacrifice.
3. List the promises God promised Abraham.
4. Can you say God fulfilled his promise of many Nation to Abraham? How?
