Performance Objective: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
(a) define communication.

Content:
COMMUNICATION:
Communication refers to the sharing of information with one another. Communication is divided into
(i) Traditional communication
(ii) Modern communication.

Traditional communication takes any of the following four forms:
(a) By signals
(b) by sound
(c) By oral message
(d) By contact.


Modern communication: This is the sharing of information with many people in different places a with the help of medicine. Modern communication can take any of the following types.
(A) Mass Communication
(B) Postal services
(C) Telegrams etc.


Evaluation:
(i) define communication
(ii) mention and discuss the type of communication
(iii) give three examples of traditional and modern communication.

Assignment: Draw and paste on your note three traditional means of communication

Telecommunication

Content:
Telecommunication:
Telecommunication refers to communication aided by electrical and electronic transmission. The most popular form of telecommunication today is Global system for Mobile telecommunication. Other media of telecommunication include. Telegram, telephone, wireless, telex etc.


THE ROLES OF COMMUNICATION
1. Communication helps manufacturers to advertise their products
2. It enables the consumers to know the type of products available in the market.
3. It helps to create awareness about government activities in Nigeria.
4. It helps employers and applicants in recruitment and employment respectively.
5. Mass communication has been used to foster in national unity.

LESSON 17
Topic: National Cultural patterns

Performance Objective: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
(a) identify the various ethnic group in Nigeria
(b) explain the historical origin of Yoruba people

Content:
There are over two hundred and fifty ethnic group in Nigeria. However, three ethnic groups are the major ones. They are (i) Yoruba (ii) Hausa (iii) Igbo


THE YORUBA PEOPLE
The Yoruba is one of the largest language groups in Nigeria. They are concentrated in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Kwara States. They are also fund in some parts of Edo State. they spread beyond Nigeria as they are to be found in the Republic of Benin and Togo, Cuba and Brazil.


HISTORY ORIGIN OF THE YORUBA
The Yorubas trace their ancestry to Oduduwa. According to tradition he was the son of Lamurudu. He came from upper Nile and settled in Ile-Ife about 100AD. Ile Ife is therefore regarded as the original home of the Yorubas.

LOCATION AND HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF THE YORUBAS
The Hausa ethnic group is concentrated in Kano, Jigawa, Niger and Sokoto States. They extend to Ghana and the Republic of Niger.

HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF THE HAUSA PEOPLE
Bayajidda, a Baghdad prince is regarded as the ancestor of the Hausas. He was a legendry figure who was said to be the son of the king of Baghdad. He moved from Badghdad to daura. In Daura, he asked for water to drink but was told that the only source of water was well which had been taken over by a powerful snake. The snake would allow people to drink water from the well only on Friday but it was on Thursday that Bayajidda wanted water.


Sarki was the name of the snake king. The queen of Daura promised half of her kingdom to anyone who kills the snake. Bayajida, also known as Abuyazida killed the snake. Rather than take half of the queen's kingdom, he demanded for the queen in marriage. The marriage produced Bawo. Bawo in turn gave birth to seven children who founded the seven kingdoms. These are Biran, Daura, Kano, Rano, Kastina, Zaria and Gombe.


Evaluation:
(i) mention at least ten ethnic groups in Nigeria
(ii) briefly explain the origin of Yoruba people
(iii) narrate briefly the origin of the Hausas

Assignment: Write a short story about Oduduwa.

Content:
THE LOCATION AND THE HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF THE IGBO PEOPLE:
The Igbo people are concentrated in Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra and Imo State. they extend to part of Rivers and Delta States.
Leadership in Igbo land is on personal merits and achievement. The traditional rulers that exist in Igbo land today apart from the Obi of Onisha are recent creations.

Traditional system of government in Igbo land is based on age. The family heads constitute the council of elders that govern each village. The elders are called Oturaza or Ndioha. The Igbo believed that their god, Uwa create all things while supernatural being, Chukwu (God) gives everyone
The Igbo people were one of the first groups in Africa to develop their own from of writing called nsibidi. The major occupation of the Igbo is farming.


Evaluation:
(i) mention the names of states in Nigeria that belong to the Igbo people
(ii) explain the system of government of the Igbo people.

COMMON HERITAGE:
NATION: A nation refers to a group of people who have a sense of belonging as a result of common culture, origin, and descent.
A heritage is something which has been on, or may be inherited. Nigerians have a heritage because we inherited certain traits from our fore-fathers. While a trait is a form of behavior which distinguished a person or a group of persons from others.
At the individual level, a person's trait may be known through the way he speaks or the way he laughs, the way they bury their dead, the types of food they eat, the religion, greetings, attitude to strangers and visitors represents their traits.


COMMON TRAITS IN NIGERIA
A Common Historical Experience:
(i) pre-colonial political units
(ii) slave trade
(iii) Colonial experience.

B Common Political System
C Common Socio - Cultural System
D Common Economic System

NATIONAL SYMBOLS
The national traits in Nigeria have been transformed into symbols in order to promote national loyalty, identify and unity.
These national symbols are;

(iii) the National pledge


(iv) The National Anthem


(v) The Nigerian passport


(vi) Nigerian Currency and Coin




(vii) The head of State / President


(viii) The map of Nigeria

Specific topic: Heroes and Heroine

Performance Objective: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
(a) state the meaning of hero and heroine
(b) mention the names of Nigerian heroes and heroine and tier roles.

Content:
HEROES AND HEROINE:
Heroes and heroines refers to men and women who have contributed greatly to the development of their communities or nation. Some of them are associated with the myths of some ethnic groups. These are legendary heroes like Oduduwa Image, Bayajidda, Emotan and Queen Amina Image.

The following are some of the heroes and heroines in Nigeria.
EMOTAN: She is a heroine among the Edo or Binis. Her Statue has stood since 1954 in an open square near the Oba market at the centre of Benin city. She assisted prince Ewuare who was exiled to come back to the throne. In recognition of her role, she was declared a heroine.


SARAUNIYA AMINA: She was a woman leader who helped her people to defeat their enemies. She built a protective will around her kingdom.


MUHHAMED EL KANEMI: He was an educated and religions man who became a military leader and saved the Borno people from the Fulani invaders.


Other heroes an Nigeria include: Jaja of Opobo, Samuel Ajayi Crowther, Herbert Macaulay, General Murtala Muhammed, M.K.O. Abiola and many
more.






Evaluation:
(i) define a hero
(ii) mention at least eight Nigerian heroes and heroines.
